Project Engineer

About the job

Comcor Environmental Limited is seeking qualified applicants for the full-time position of Project Engineer. Core responsibilities include a variety of duties primarily related to landfill gas control systems including design/tender of landfill gas control and/or utilization systems, assessment of landfill gas migration, assessment of landfill gas recovery potential as well as project management and contract administration of construction projects. The Project Engineer is also responsible for landfill gas related reporting to regulatory and government agencies, preparing approval applications, writing technical reports and proposals. Under the supervision of the Project Managers, the Project Engineer may also be responsible for managing engineering projects, including budgeting and scheduling, and maintaining effective communication to clients and stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in civil, environmental, mechanical or chemical engineering and a P.Eng. designation. Project management certifications would be an asset.
  • Five to ten years of experience in a similar role.
  • Strong communication (both verbal and written) and interpersonal skills, including the ability to coordinate with a variety of internal and external stakeholders to achieve objectives and influence others towards a course of action.
  • Working knowledge of civil and environmental or mechanical engineering principles; federal and provincial environmental acts, regulations and guidelines; and CSA codes and TSSA amendments relating to landfill gas and propane installations.
  • Understanding of mechanical and process engineering principles, equipment design/operating principles (related to blowers, pumps and valves, etc.) and landfill design and overall operations.
  • Good organization and time management skills, including the ability to balance multiple priorities.

Position Summary:
As a Maintenance Technician, you will play a critical role in operating and maintaining our landfill gas-to-energy and flaring facilities, as well as performing gas wellfield monitoring and maintenance. This hands-on role is ideal for a mechanically inclined professional passionate about renewable energy and sustainability. While the position is based in Ottawa, occasional travel within the Eastern Ontario corridor may be required.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Operate and maintain landfill gas to energy and flaring systems.

  • Perform gas wellfield monitoring, tuning, and repairs to ensure optimal performance.

  • Conduct regular inspections and preventative maintenance on mechanical equipment.

  • Troubleshoot and resolve operational issues efficiently.

  • Record and maintain operational and maintenance logs for compliance and reporting purposes.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to resolve system issues and implement improvements.
  • Comply with safety and environmental standards and participate in regular training programs.

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Education: High School Diploma or equivalent (technical training or certification is an asset)

  • Experience: Minimum of 5 years of experience in plant operations or maintaining mechanical machinery is preferred. Experience in the landfill gas or renewable energy sector is preferred, but not required.

  • Strong mechanical aptitude and ability to troubleshoot equipment.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word) for data entry and reporting.

  • Valid driver’s license and clean driving record.

  • Self-motivated with the ability to work independently and manage time effectively.

Additional Details:

  • Work Schedule: Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM (day shift).

  • On-Call Requirements: On call every 6-7 weeks in Eastern Ontario.

  • Overtime: Approximately 20 hours per month.

  • Reports to: Manager – Plant Operations.

Key Responsibilities:
As a Landfill Gas Environmental Technician, you’ll play a key role in monitoring and maintaining landfill gas systems, ensuring safety, efficiency, and compliance with environmental standards. Here’s what you’ll do:

  • Operate, monitor, and maintain landfill gas collection and control systems, including wells, flares, and blowers, ensuring compliance with environmental regulations and safety standards.

  • Conduct regular inspections, troubleshoot issues, and repair landfill gas system components as needed.

  • Perform gas sampling and analysis to assess system performance and identify potential improvements.

  • Maintain detailed records of gas monitoring data, equipment maintenance, and repairs.

  • Collaborate with environmental engineers and team members to optimize gas collection efficiency.

  • Supervise and participate in on-site construction projects.

  • Perform general plant maintenance and site upkeep.

  • Assist with utilization plant operations and maintenance as required.

Qualifications:
You thrive on problem-solving, love the outdoors, and are mechanically inclined. You have:

  • A diploma from an accredited Civil or Environmental Engineering Technology program, a degree in Environmental Sciences, or certification from a Gas Technician program.

  • 1–3 years of experience in landfill gas management or a related field.

  • Fieldwork experience, including hands-on environmental sampling, construction supervision, and mechanical maintenance/troubleshooting.

  • Knowledge of landfill gas collection systems, environmental regulations, and safety standards.

  • Strong problem-solving skills, mechanical aptitude, and proficiency with monitoring equipment and software.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, especially Excel.

  • Comfortable working at heights and in confined spaces.

  • A valid driver’s license and willingness to travel.

  • Self-motivation and the ability to work independently.

Physical Requirements:
This role requires the ability to:

  • Work outdoors in various weather conditions.

  • Lift and move equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.

  • Perform tasks that involve working at heights, confined spaces, climbing, kneeling, and standing for extended periods.

Position Details:

  • Schedule: Full-time, Monday to Friday (8:30 am – 5:00 pm), with on-call shifts approximately once every 6-7 weeks.

  • Travel: Occasional travel within Eastern Ontario.

  • Reporting: Reports to the Manager of Plant Operations.

  • Transportation: Company vehicles may be available, though occasional use of a personal vehicle may be required.
